What a year!
This year, Baron von Weasel Music grew from a roster of one band to four, launched a snazzy new website, released a record, and raised over $1,000 for charity! And it’s been a massive year for the Baron bands too, with The Balls headlining SinnerRock festival during a second European tour; Sordid Ordeal and DevilMonkey rejigging their line-ups and working hard on new material; and Australian Kingswood Factory releasing Bloodshot & Shakin’ and supporting huge US rockers Red Fang.
Obviously it’s not all about us, though, and even though we’ve been flat out, we’ve also enjoyed another great year of local music with all you crazy cats.
One to watch: Baron first caught local party-thrash band The Daggar (formerly known as Vadgedagger) at the Brunny a while back, but has chosen them as his ‘one to watch’ band for 2019, having seen them again at Bombay Rock this year. Cool rock n roll with righteous moustaches.
Best gig: For personal reasons the Singing Bird Sessions launch has to be the gig of the year, but Baron also has high praise for Psycho Moto, who only formed this year and whose first ever gig blew him away. Outstanding dirty blues-rock.
Best vinyl: Baron was stoked with his copy of the Full Metal Jacket edition from The Ruiner. This hand-made, spot-welded rusty metal album cover is described as looking and feeling like the band’s sound, and they weren’t lying! It was first released in 2016 by label Desert Highways, but was Baron’s favourite buy this year.
Meanwhile Sharon has been enjoying Fluff‘s self-titled debut album – blissful psychedelic fuzz rock.
Best venue: Easy – Bombay Rock! Kacey and Smasher are not only an unstoppable force but great to work with, and we love that they’re always evolving this cracking new venue. Can’t wait to see what’s next!
So what’s in the works for 2019? Well, all four Baron bands are working on new material, so we’ll be busy flooding your news feeds with that! We’ve got a spark of an idea for a festival, and we might even be expanding… watch this space!
Happy end of one year and merry start of another, and thanks as always for your support!
Baron & Sharon xx
